Silver-washed Fritillary

A butterfly that has returned to the County in recent years and is now getting well established.

Has been seen at both Clapgate Pits and Messingham Sand Quarry as well as many other sites.

July is the best time to look for it.

Even better to find the dark form 'Valezina'.

Wall

Sometimes called the Wall Brown, this is becoming a rare butterfly throughout the UK.

Lincolnshire is lucky in that it retains a good population, mainly among the Dunes on the coast but also around Scunthorpe.

It is usually seen every year at Messingham Sand Quarry around July-September on a sunny day.

Small Heath

Another butterfly to look out for in the Summer months.
Once common on the short grass at Messingham Sand Quarry, it has become much rarer as the site has developed.
